Amid the coronavirus pandemic, most countries have placed vaccine procurement as their top priority. Unfortunately, the biggest vaccine manufacturer in the world, the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune, was caught ablaze.

Luckily, authorities have declared the fire to be out and will not impact the production of coronavirus vaccines. SII is in partnership with Oxford University and AstraZeneca. Together, the SII produces the “Covidshield” vaccine.

Following the blaze, the company’s CEO, Adar Poonawalla posted on Twitter:

I would like to reassure all governments & the public that there would be no loss of #COVISHIELD production due to multiple production buildings that I had kept in reserve to deal with such contingencies at @SerumInstIndia. Thank you very much @PuneCityPolice & Fire Department

Currently, authorities are still investigating the incident as the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Meanwhile, primary investigations suggested the fire was due to wielding work.
