Mochi Donut Business Saves Couple From Struggles Of Losing Jobs Amid Pandemic
MOCHI DONUT BUSINESS SAVES COUPLE – As the onslaught of the coronavirus swept the Philippines, millions have lost their sources of income.
However, amid the struggles, ingenuity and passion bloomed for Julianna Gatchalian and Hans Ramos, the founders of online mochi donut shop, Poof! Pastries. According to an article from ABS-CBN, the couple lost their respective jobs due to the pandemic.
Furthermore, both expressed concerns that they may never earn again after losing their primary sources of income. But, the couple went back to their roots and decided to push their passion forward to establish Poof! Pastries.
They explained that back in 2017 while the couple was in college, they created an online cookie business to earn on the side while they studied. The business quickly took off but both decided to put it on hold to focus on their academics.
Still, their family and friends gave them tremendous support in their initial endeavors. With this, both realized their talents for baking. Years later, they went back to this formula and created a unique entry to the saturated food market in the Philippines – Mochi Donuts.
As per the article, Ramos said:
Everywhere we looked everyone has been selling the same product: cookies, brownies, cupcakes and cakes. Julianna and I wanted to sell pastries which were very unique to the Filipino eye and weren’t easily accessible here in the Philippines — which is why we chose mochi donuts
Furthermore, Ramos explained how Juliana always wanted to bring mochi donuts from Japan over to the Philippines. Additionally, only a few companies sold the product so there was a void easily filled with no competition.
