Death Penalty Revival In PH To Be Tackled In Senate Says Sotto

DEATH PENALTY IN PH – Following a series of gruesome killings in the country, calls for the revival of the Death Penalty take place.

Recently, the deaths of Sonya and Frank Gregorio at the hands of killer cop Jonel Nuezca pushed many to call for the death penalty. Meanwhile, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said it has been a hot-button issue that would be part of the Senate’s legislative agenda for 2021.

Last week, the Senate President gave reporters a copy of the chamber’s 20-item priority list of the 18th Congress. Furthermore, sitting at No.3, we could see the return of capital punishment or more widely known as the death penalty.

Aside from the controversial death penalty in the Philippines, Sotto’s list also covered proposal to enact laws on land use. Along with this, the list includes the creation of a Department of Overseas Filipinos.

Moreover, the Senate aims to tackle the Medical Reserve Corps Acts and a creation of the Philippines own Disease Prevention and Control Authority. Additionally, there would also be amendments made to the Anti-Money Laundering Act and Retirement and Pensions act.

In June 2006, former President Glorio Magapagal-Arroyo signed R.A. 9346. This abolished capital punishment with an estimated 1,200 convicts scheduled for execution via lethal injection.
