Featuring the stories of workers amid pandemic as part of the Year Ender 2020
Year Ender 2020 – This year has been extra difficult for many workers as they have to face the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some have experienced worst as they suffered from untimely termination. In a report in April, the Department of Labor and Employment stated that more than two million workers were displaced amid the pandemic.
For those who were able to hold on to their jobs, they still had to do extra effort in order to earn money.
Last August, an article was published about three construction workers who asked for help on the streets after losing their job.
Just a few days after the enhanced community quarantine was implemented, a construction worker walked for five hours in order to reach his home. Amid the pandemic, the scenario of workers walking for several hours from home to their workplace and vice versa has become a new normal.
Jeepney drivers and drivers of other public utility vehicles also suffered from the effect of the health crisis. Many of them were forced to stop their jobs and this means no income for them and their families.
Some had to find other ways to have an income just like the jeepney drivers in Manila who started selling vegetables. On the other hand, many of them begged for money on the streets.
This 2020 has been tough also even for doctors and nurses who are even earning way better than constructions workers, jeepney drivers, and other workers who don’t have fix income.
It is because healthcare workers had to do extra shift, longer hours that what was their previous schedule because of the health crisis. They are also more prone to getting the infection. Most of all, behind their efforts and sacrifices, they even suffered from discrimination.
