Jennylyn Mercado shared her recent thoughts about body-shaming
Kapuso actress Jennylyn Mercado has these fierce words for the body-shaming remark “uy tumaba ka”.
The modern culture of Filipinos, many if not all, embraced new ways of greeting friends, relatives, and loved ones. During gatherings, family reunions, or whatever event, instead of asking “how are you?” to people who haven’t seen each other for a while, most Pinoys would say “uy tumaba ka” or you are fat now.
For some, this has no effect but it is inevitable that this can be a form of body-shaming and that the person receiving these words might be getting hurt but chose not to show the lowering level of confidence.
In line with this, Jennylyn Mercado spoke and addressed the “toxic Filipino trait”. “Can we discontinue this toxic Filipino trait na tuwing nagkikita ang hilig mag komento tungkol sa physical looks ng iba tulad ng – ‘uy tumaba ka,'” she wrote in her recent Twitter post.
The Kapuso actress also stressed that it could affect the personality of an individual. “It’s not okay. First of all it’s rude, second it may trigger some people na may Ed. Maling mali,” she said.
Several netizens on the micro-blogging social media platform agreed with what she said. Some netizens also shared their own experiences during gatherings that affected their emotional and mental state.
Jennylyn Mercado also replied to some of the comments from her Twitter followers. Here are the things that the actress said to them.
Meanwhile, another celebrity just recently addressed the body-shaming remarks that many Pinoys are accustomed to do already. Actress-singer Janella Salvador said in her recent tweet that “Filipinos are the worst body shamers”.
