Expert Warn Of Worse Holiday Surge If New Coronavirus Strain Gets Into PH
NEW CORONAVIRUS STRAIN – An expert in infectious diseases urged the government to conduct a travel ban on the U.K. over the new COVID-19 strain.
Recently, health authorities from Britain reported a new strain of COVID-19 among patients. Furthermore, studies on the newly discovered strain revealed it to be more infectious. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that though it spreads faster, it’s no deadlier than the previous strains.
According to an article from ABS-CBN, the new strain is unique from the previous G614 variant the Philippines has recorded for several months. However, Dr. Rontgene Solante still raised concerns of its potential threat to the Philippines.
“Ang pangamba natin ‘pag ang isang tao nahawaan ng ganitong strain mas mabilis niyang mahahawa ito sa tao rin“, said Solante. Moreover, he pushed for the government to reconsider travel restriction from the U.K. to the Philippines.
Additionally, he suggested that the Philippines study the effects of the new strain first before allowing those from the U.K. to enter. “There will be a higher tendency na mataas talaga ang risk na tumataas ang kaso because of this particular strain“, he said.
Then, the health expert emphasized that the most important thing to consider is monitoring and testing the new COVID-19 strain. He then urged the public to postpone gatherings and reunions, as much as possible.
