Representative Garin Reminds Filipino People About Food Wastage During Christmas Season

AAMBIS-OWA party-list Representative Sharon Garin reminded the Filipino people to avoid wasting food during Christmas season.

Solon wants to ensure that Filipinos are not wasting food amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. She cited the reports that around 690 million people are suffering from starvation and malnutrition over the last five years.

The food and nutrition security of the country is under threat due to the effects of the health crisis. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations also reported that around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions came from food wastage.

Garin made the announcement after the approval of House Bill 7956 or the proposed Food Surplus Reduction Act seeking the reduction of wasting excess food. He wants to address the country’s problem on food waste.

The bill aims to reuse the excess foods as livestock feed to help farmers rather than throwing it on dumpsites. It also prescribes some steps on edible food surplus distribution and forming a strategy for proper management of food, which still fit for human consumption.

A bill would also create a National Zero-Food Waste Campaign to raise awareness and minimize the food wastage.
