Around 3.8M Local Workers & 550k OFWs Displaced Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, According to DOLE

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has displaced over 3.8 million workers and almost 550,000 OFWs.

On Thursday (December 17, 2020), DOLE Assistance Secretary Dominique Tutay said that around 3.8 million Filipino employees and over 550,000 overseas Filipino workers have been affected by the health crisis.

Millions of Filipino employees have lost their jobs while some of them were under flexible work arrangements. Some workers have been affected by the temporary closure of their companies.

COVID-19 Pandemic

DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III said that the agency allocated around P3 billion to help 658,886 employees from the private sectors under the COVID-19 Adjustment Measures Program (CAMP). DOLE’s TUPAD program helped over 423,000 employees to receive financial aid in the informal sector.

DOLE International Labor Affairs Bureau director Alice Visperas reported that more than 550,000 Filipino migrant workers have lost their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Around 370,000 of them have been repatriated but the remaining 126,000 are waiting for their repatriation. The other 82,000 have decided to remain.

“In these difficult times, we take our hats off to our Filipino workers here and abroad for their selfless sacrifices. To those who have fallen in the line of duty, they are truly our heroes. They all deserve our accolades,” Bello said.
