Brazil Delays Chinese Vaccine Efficiency Data Reports
BRAZIL DELAYS CHINESE VACCINE DATA – Amid Political turmoil regarding COVID-19 vaccinations, health authorities in Brazil decided to delay efficiency reports.
Supposedly, the reports for China’s Sinovac vaccine should’ve been passed on Monday. As such, the delay tightened the timeframe for regulator approval post the planned distribution on January 25, 2021.
Meanwhile, according to Governor Joao Doria, the vaccine data report would be released on December 23, a week later than planned. Doria explained that the delay was made to allow a larger sample size and a more definitive analysis.
Earlier, João Gabbardo, head of Sao Paulo’s COVID-19 response stated that the delay allows the study to integrate data from a sample size of 151 infected patients. With this, researchers could get a more complete results rather than preliminary report.
However, according to an article from Inquirer, the announcement of the delayed distribution of the China vaccine angered the federal government of President Jair Bolsonaro. Previously, Brazil’s President had denied the severity of the virus and is skeptical of the vaccine.
Furthermore, the President emphasized that he would not get immunized for COVID-19. Additionally, Doria’s public pressure also irked health regulator Anvisa, which is primarily run by Bolsonaro allies.
However, despite all this, Brazil should have a public health system that’s well equipped to handle large-scale vaccination campaigns. Moreover, the country also holds an enviable record for national vaccine vaccinations.
