Chan’s decision was due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. However, he assured the city hall employees that they would receive their 13th month pay as well as 5 kilograms of rice and ham.

The city mayor said that he can do nothing but to release the Christmas bonuses to their employees if President Rodrigo Duterte would order the local government units to release it.

“If there is a mandate from the president nga tagaan ang mga empleyado ug bonuses, mangita pa gyud mi ug asa mi’g i-realign nga kwarta nga pwede namong ihatag,” Chan said.
