The late environmentalist and ABS-CBN executive Gina Lopez had this post in 2017 calling for the restoration of Marikina Watershed went viral just recently after the flooding due to typhoon Ulysses.

Many areas in Luzon Region suffered from severe flooding as the strong typhoon hit the country. The Marikina river overflowed and this aggravated the problem.

Although rescuers and private individuals worked together in rescuing and ensuring the safety of many people, the calamity has still left devastating damage to many households, and lives were even taken.

In line with the recent flooding, the post of Gina Lopez back in 2017 resurfaced and this went viral on social media. The late environmentalist shared an aerial shot of the Pasig River and she pointed out that the Marikina Watershed needed to be rehabilitated as it is the “first line of defense of Marikina, Quezon City, Antipolo, Pasig, Cainta, San Mateo, etc.

She also stressed in her post that quarrying should not be present in the said area because this will be the cause of flooding in Metro Manila. “It is imperative that the Marikina Watershed is reforested!!!” she said.

Many netizens on Twitter shared this past post of the late ABS-CBN executive. Several of them also shared that Gina Lopez should have been the Environment Secretary but a majority of the Commission on Appointment did not support her.

There were also netizens who pointed out that the late environmentalist has already given a warning but no one listened to her. Some netizens compared what happened to Gina Lopez with what the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has said also in the past as what was published by Esquire.
