The victim was identified as Virgilio Maganes, a freelance radio commentator and writer at local paper Northern Watch, according to a report from Manila Bulletin.

Initial probe show that Maganes was buying cigarettes, and was going to return to his family at about 6:45 AM, when two unknown assailants onboard a motorcycle came and shot him six times. The victim died on the spot.

A police officer reported that the assailants wanted to kill him as they pulled the trigger.

“Talagang target siyang patayin sa dami ng ipinutok na bala sa katawan nito”

Police are yet to determine the motive of the said killing. The incident occurred at about four years from a previous attempt to assassinate him last November 8, 2016.

That time, Maganes was commuting to dwPR, a local radio where he anchored an 8 AM program in Dagupan City when two men attempted to kill him. They were also onboard a motorcycle.

Police Regional Office( PRO)  1 Director Police Brigadier General Rodolfo S Azurin, Jr ordered the immediate activation of the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Maganes due to this, based on the report.

“I directed the PD (Provincial Director) Pangasinan to activate SITG Maganes, and find out the possible motive of the killing, and (work for) the immediate solution of the case,”
