Philippine cinema mourns as Mila Del Sol died

Former Paranaque City Rep. Gus Tambunting confirms that his grandmother Mila del Sol, the Queen of Golden Age of the Philippine cinema, died on Tuesday.

Born Clarita Villarba Rivera in Tondo, Manila, Mila is considered as one of the showbiz personalities who had an inspiring rags-to-riches story, based on the article from Manila Bulletin.

She was active in the industry from the 1930s to the 1940s. Mila retired from doing showbiz stints 56 years ago and ventured into the janitorial service and put up the Superior Maintenance Service which is one of the leading janitorial firms nowadays.

Former lawmaker Gus Tambunting announced the passing away of his grandmother. In his statement, he shared that Mila del Sol became popular after being photographed with then-President Manuel L. Quezon. In 1939, the said photo circulated in national newspapers.

Quezon enjoyed her first film, Giliw Ko, and asked to congratulate my Lulay personally during the premiere of the movie. . As a Tondo girl, she was not used to wearing high heels, so she took them off, then rushed to the president,” Tambunting said.

The family of the former actress said that it is an honor for them to carry her legacy. “Lola Mila rose from the poverty of her younger years to become the queen of the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema,” Tambunting added.

Behind her success in the entertainment industry during her era, the family of Mila del Sol will always remember her as a “loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother.”

Based on the article, the Queen of Golden Age of the Philippine cinema survived her four children. She’s 97 years old.
