The Customs Bureau said that it intercepted 119 live tarantulas hidden inside rubber shoes in a DHL warehouse on October 28, according to a report from GMA News.

The parcel, which was declared as “buty” or shoes in Polish, was shipped by Michal Krolicki” from Poland to a consignee in the town of General Trias, Cavite.

The package yielded suspicious images and was subjected to physical examination via the vigilance of Customs operatives and examiners, the Customs added.

They also said that their operatives uncovered different species of live tarantulas packed in individual plastic vials.

The species were immediately turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit (DENR WTMU) for proper handling and disposal, based on the report.

BOC-NAIA also intercepted 757 live tarantulas last year. They were concealed inside oatmeal and cookie boxes. 87 live spiders were also wrapped inside white plastic canisters. They were both exported from Poland.

Tarantulas are classified as endangered wildlife species. Illegal wildlife trading of such species, as well as others, is penalized with imprisonment of six months and one day to one year and a fine of P10,000.00 to P200,000.00 in compliance with Republic Act (RA) No. 9147 or Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

On the other hand, unlawful importation is penalized with not less than 30 days with a fine of not less than P25,000.00 but not more than P75,000.00.

The Customs also said that it will sustain collective effort to protect NAIA against all fraudulent attempts in order to import and/or export endangered wildlife species, as well as dangerous drugs and other high risk and dangerous contrabands that are rendered a threat to national security and public health.
