Barber in Palawan Creates Rolling Barbershop Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Barber in Palawan Continue Service Via Rolling Barbershop Amid Pandemic

A barber in Puerto Princesa, Palawan created a rolling barbershop to continue his service and earn a living amid the public health crisis.

Bem Arenez, a barber for 15 years, needs to find a way to survive in the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, which greatly affects the livelihoods of fellow countrymen. As a result, he created a rolling barbershop to serve students and earn a living amid the pandemic.

In his interview on “Stand for Truth,” Arenez shared that he was having a hard time looking for an available job as most shops were closed. Barbershops, salons, and other beauty services have been previously prohibited due to community quarantine guidelines.

“Naisipan kong gumawa ng rolling barbershop dahil wala ng mga estudyante na sa barbershop pumupunta dahil sa pandemic. Sinabihan ng bawal lumabas ng bahay,” Arenez said.

“Kaya naisipan kong gumawa ng rolling barbershop. Ako na lang susuyo sa kanilang mga sitio, purok, kung saang barangay at tatawagan nila ako sa cell number ko at pupuntahan ko na lang sila ng rolling barbershop ko,” he added.

Arenez had to barter the mountain bike he had been using for two years in exchange for a sidecar. Jun Jun Dela Cruz, who agreed to trade the mountain bike with Arenez, said he let Arenez off the hook for an unpaid P2,500 balance as he understood how difficult the time was.

Using tarpaulins and curtains, Arenez changed the sidecar into a barbershop. While he had no barber pole, he made a wooden sign. The rolling barbershop charges customers P50 per haircut.
