Año Wants Pro-Government “Fact-Checkers” At Facebook To Avoid Bias

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año Said He Wants Pro-Government Fact-Checkers

PRO-GOVERNMENT FACT-CHECKERS – Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said he wants Facebook to have “independent and fair” fact-checkers who are uncritical of the government.

Previously, Facebook deleted over 150 pro-government accounts which many officials call “advocacy groups”. However, Facebook’s cybersecurity team had already provided evidence revealing the pages and accounts were linked to China.

Moreover, the accounts also had “coordinated inauthentic behavior on behalf of a foreign or government entity”. Along with this, the accounts were also active with red-tagging groups critical of the government.

Because of this, Año wanted to have a talk with Facebook executives regarding the issue. He said that it was unfair to the admins of the pages that their platform was quickly removed without prior warning.

As such, according to an article from Manila Bulletin, Año said:

“Dapat may fact checker na tinatawag natin na independent, fair at hindi naman kritiko ng pamahalaan”.

Año cited that fact-checkers on the Platform such as VERA Files and Rappler were critical against President Duterte’s administration. He explained that he wants a balance on Facebook of fact-checkers to match VERA Files and Rappler.

Furthermore, Año highlighted how Facebook conducted a “unilateral act of taking down” the freedom of speech of government supporters. Meanwhile, he did note the importance of the platform in connecting families, especially those in the Philippines and abroad.
