This came from a statement from the city Mayor Benjamin Magalong, according to a recent report from CNN Philippines.

“It will not change our plan to open to tourists. In fact, we’re scheduled to formally open it tomorrow,”

Magalong said this while talking about opening the city gates to up to 200 visitiors from Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon starting Friday.

The summer capital of the Philippines earlier accepted tourists from the Ilocos Region on October 1 in an attempt to jump-start the local economy.

The mayor said that they continue to be “really aggressive” in terms of testing and increasing their capacity to isolate via adding more beds in facilities and tracing contacts to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in the city.

“In fact, this coming Oct. 26, 27, 28, we’ll do a marathon test that will be 1,000 per day. At present, we are doing about 400-500 a day, at an average. That includes the combination of antigen and RT-PCR,”

Magalong added that that they are beginning to see a decline in the number of new infections, based on the report.

A team of researchers who are monitoring and evaluating COVID-19 trends in the country, tagged Baguio earlier as one of the high-risk areas die to a spike of new infections from Oct. 11 to 17.

There is a 69% hospital occupancy rate as of Oct. 16 and an 11.1% attack rate, which is referred to as the proportion of those who have gotten ill after their exposure to the virus.

One of the reasons was because of some patients from outside of Baguio whom they cannot turn away, Magalong said, adding that many of them are in critical condition.
