The site is a group of very large geoglyphs that were made in the soil of the Nazca Desert in southern Peru.

The site was made between 500 BCE and 500 CE by people making depressions or shallow incisions in the desert floor, removing pebbles and leaving differently colored dirt exposed.

Most lines run straight across the landscape, as well as figurative designs of animals and plants which measure between 0.4 and 1.1 kilometers.

The plateau stretches more than 80 kilometers or 50 miles between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana, which is about 400 kilometers and 250 miles south of Lima.

It was first published mention by Pedro Cieza de León in his book of 1553, which described the lines as trail markers. The site was reportedly seen by Luis Monzón in 1586.

One of the theorized purposes of the site, according to Anthropologists, ethnologists, and archaeologists was that they were made by the Nazca people to be seen by deities in the sky.
