Cabinet Eases Transport Restrictions As PH Reopens Economy

CABINET EASES TRANSPORT RESTRICTIONS – As the government moves toward reopening the economy, the Cabinet approves easing transport restrictions.

Currently, the Philippines is on its 7th month of lockdowns, the longest in the world. However, it seems that the government is finally easing restrictions as the number of cases begins to lower.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the cabinet greenlit the one-seat distance rule. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) expanded rail capacity from 30 to 50 percent.

Furthermore, Roque stated that the one-seat apart protocol would be imposed as soon as the DOTr provides proper guidelines. Along with this, he said they need to publish it in reputable newspapers or the Official Gazette.

Additionally, the Cabinet also approved the regulated resumption of provincial bus operations. Likewise, motorcycles, taxis, shuttles, and other transportation network service vehicles would also see gradual resumption.

But, if the number of coronavirus cases in the Philippines would rise again, Roque said the government would retain the quarantine level. However, he emphasized that it would instead impose stricter protocols and additional quarantines in the local level.

Currently, the Philippines has 344,713 cases of coronavirus reported. Of that number, 293,383 have recovered. Sadly, over 6,300 have succumbed to the deadly disease.

With this many number of cases, the Philippines has become part of the top 20 countries with the most number of COVID-19 cases. But, the number of active coronavirus cases in the country has been gradually declining.
