FIVE THEMES OF GROGRAPHY – In this topic, we are goiung to know and learn about the five themes of geography and the definition of each.

Five Themes Of Geography

Geography refers to the study of the lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena of the Earth and planets.

It also covers all disciplines needed to understand the Earth, the people and how it is formed and change.

Five Themes

Here are the following five themes:

  • Location
    • refers to the location of the places within the Earth. There are two ways to find the location.
      • Absolute – refers to the location as described by  latitude at longitude lines which forms a grid.
      • Relative – refers to the location as described to where it is compared to something else.
  • Place
    • refers to the area defined by everything in it. All places have features that give them personality.
      • Toponym – a place name, especially one derived from a topographical feature.
      • Site – area of ground on which a town, building, or monument is constructed
      • Situation – the location and surroundings of a place.
      • Population – number of people that live in the area.
  • Human-environment interaction
    • this describes how people interact with the environment, and how the environment responds. There are three key concepts:
      • Dependency – Humans depends on the environment
      • Adaptation – Humans adapt to the environment
      • Modification – Humans modify the environment
  • Movement
    • refers to the travel of people, goods, and ideas from one location to another, or political events.
  • Region
    • refers to areas with distinctive characteristics: human characteristics, such as demographics or politics, and physical characteristics, such as climate and vegetation.
