Claudine Barretto Refuses To Eat To Convince Parents to Let Her Be an Actress

CLAUDINE BARRETTO – Filipina ‘Optimum Star’ Claudine Barretto recalled she go on a hunger strike to convince her parents to let her be an actress.

Filipina actress Claudine Barretto is a household name among most Pinoys. Her most iconic roles include the inspiring OFW who falls in love in ‘Milan,’ the hopeful mermaid in ABS-CBN’s tv show ‘Marina,’ and the role of the disobedient daughter in the critically acclaimed drama film “Anak.”

Claudine’s performance in the movie ‘Milan’ earned her the FAMAS Award for Best Actress. Aside from being an actress, she’s also an entrepreneur and brand endorser.

Claudine Barretto is the youngest among 7 children of Estrella Barretto and Miguel Barretto. She is the sister of two other celebs Gretchen Barretto and Marjorie Barretto. Kapamilya star Julia Barretto is her niece.

In her interview with actress Gladys Reyes for the online show PELIkwentuhan of EBC Films, she recalled how she entered the show business. She revealed she almost didn’t become an actress because her parents were against it.

“Before Ang TV, nag-Repertory Philippines ako. So, teatro talaga ang pinasok ko at 10 years old. Tapos eleven years old sa Repertory nakuha ko yung lead  ng Grease ni Olivia Newton John at John Travolta. Nanood si Douglas Quijano ng play ko,” Claudine said.

Douglas Quijano was a famous talent manager before. He handles talents like Joey Marquez, Aiko Melendez, Richard Gomez, and the Gwapings among others.

“Ayaw pumayag ng parents ko na mag-artista pa rin talaga ako. During that time, kinukuha pa lang nila ako for Gwapings the Movie. Yung kay Abby Viduya na role. Yung parents ko ayaw talaga na mag-artista ako. Ang usapan namin hanggang theater lang talaga. Tapos wala na, wala nang iba.”

“Tapos doon na talaga ako pinatawag ni Mr. M. And then, doon ko na kinulit nang kinulit ang magulang ko. Pero ayaw pa rin nila…

“Gusto lang siguro nila na for me is to live a normal life… ‘Since gusto mo naman umarte sa theater, mag-theater ka na lang. Wala namang mga intriga doon. Walang sc*ndals,’” she added.

Claudine Barretto said she decided to go on hunger strike to convince her parents to her be an actress. After that, her parents eventually allowed her to become part of ABS-CBN’s show “Ang TV.”
