Bacterial Outbreak In China Infects Several Thousand Says Health Authorities

BACTERIAL OUTBREAK IN CHINA – Following the coronavirus outbreak, China has fallen victim to another, this time, to bacteria caused by a factory leak.

A large biopharmaceutical company in Gansu Province, Northwest China, confirmed 3,245 people tested positive for brucellosis. Usually, this is contracted from livestock with the Brucella bacteria.

Furthermore, the disease known as Malta fever or Mediterranean fever may cause symptoms such as headache, muscle pain, fever, and fatigue. Along with this, some symptoms may also be chronic like arthritis or swelling of some organs.

However, according to an article from CNN, human to human transmission of the bacteria is extremely rare. Unlike the coronavirus which spreads from person to person, this bacterial outbreak is usually contracted from eating contaminated food or breathing in bacteria.

The Factory that started the leak was known as Zhongmu Lanzhou biological pharmaceutical factory. But, the leak of the bacteria wasn’t actually a recent incident. Instead, it began around late July to late August f last year.

As per the article, when the pharma was producing Brucella vaccines for animal use, the factory used expired disinfectants. Because of this, not all the bacteria were eradicated in the waste gas, causing the leak.

In turn, waters were contaminated and the bacteria was carried along with the air down to Lanzhou Veterinary Institute, ground zero for the outbreak. Meanwhile, the institute had been reporting infections since November of last year.

Still, there had been no cases of fatalities caused by the bacterial outbreak. Moreover, the Lanzhou Health Commission announced that 11 public hospitals would give free and regular checkups for those infected with the disease.
