Netizens Slam PNP SocMed Monitoring Plan To Find Quarantine Violators

NETIZENS SLAM PNP SocMed MONITORING – As the number of reported COVID-19 cases in the Philippines is still at a concerning rate, the Philippine National Police planned to strengthen quarantine protocols.

Now, they plan to actively monitor the social media accounts of Filipinos to find quarantine violators. Surely, this plan might seem effective on paper. However, netizens claimed that this was a blatant breach of privacy.

Previously, the PNP also asked for the help of chismoso and chismosas for their contact tracing initiative. Although faced with harsh criticisms for this proposal, the health department said there was nothing wrong with asking their help.

Meanwhile, most of the netizens on social media agreed that instead of this approach, the police should punish officers who were caught in broad daylight violating protocol. Among these controversial issues was PNP chief Debold Sinas’ “Mañanita” celebration.

Still, Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, chief of the government’s Joint Task Force COVID Shield asserted that the proposal won’t breach privacy. Instead, he explained that it would empower Filipinos.

According to an article from Inquirer, Eleazar stated:

Contrary to what others think that this will be abused, it’s the other way around. You will be given the opportunity to report information. And just like what I said, the PNP leadership will not tolerate any abuse. If there will be any abuse, just let us know

Furthermore, Eleazar said that due process would still be followed and reports from netizens would need tight evidence, corroboration of events, and witnesses.
