Man Accused of Abandoning Elderly Woman Under MacArthur Bridge Arrested by Police

POLICE – The police have arrested the suspect who abandoned the elderly woman under MacArthur Bridge.

Following a previous article, a netizen shared a photo of an old woman lying on a piece of carton under MacArthur bridge on Wednesday, September 2. Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso shared the post on his Facebook Page.

Isko said the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) immediately rescued the Fulgencia Tan. He thanked the agency for responding immediately. “Pinasasalamatan po natin si Manila Department of Social Welfare Director Re Fugoso at ang MDSW Rescue Team dahil sa maagap nilang pag-rescue kay Lola Fulgencia Tan na nakita ng isang netizen sa ilalim ng MacArthur Bridge,” he wrote.

Isko Moreno said Fulgencia Tan was abandoned under MacArthur Bridge by a tricycle driver. He also shared that the old woman already underwent a medical checkup and now taken care of by MDSW.

“Ngayon po ay nasa pangangalaga na ng MDSW si Lola Fulgencia pagkatapos nitong makatanggap ng isang medical check-up,” he said.

Based on a report from GMA News, the residents said they first saw Fulgencia in front of the chapel of Brgy. 303, Zone 29. They said two men left her there.

Brgy. Chariman Ariel Sierda said, “Hindi na ho ugaling tao ‘yong ginawa niyo. Kung may problema kayo doon sa matanda, sana inihanap niyo ng institusyon na paglalagakan, hindi ‘yong parang basura niyo lang iiwan.”

Based on a report from Inquirer, the authorities have arrested the suspect who left the old woman under MacArthur bridge. The suspect was the Fulgencia’s nephew, Ephraim Tan Yap. His photo was shared on the news site’s Twitter page.

Health officials has advised the older adults to stary at home as much as possible to protect themselves from getting COVID-19. Senior citizens are at higher risk for severe illness therefore they  should limit their interaction with other people.
