According to SunStar, the truck which was from Cebu was intercepted at the Danao Port in Barangay Old Poblacion in the said city on Saturday, August 29. The truck contained eight guns.

Escalante City police chief Major Gil John Despi said that the guns, identified as .45 caliber pistols were recovered at the said vehicle which was loaded with feeds driven by Juanito Chua of Barangay La Granja, La Carlota City,

Seven of the seized pistols were wrapped in plastic and newspapers and were placed inside a cartoon. The seven were at the driver’s seat while the eighth pistol was recovered from the possession of Chua.

Initial probe showed that the driver claimed that he was tasked to transport the firearms from Cebu to Negros Occidental.

The Escalante police chief said, however, that there is a possibility that the elivery of essential goods from Cebu to Negros is being taken advantage by gunrunners in firearms transport due to the instruction of not delaying them, which is in line with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Based on the report, when Despi was tipped by his police counterparts in Cebu, he gathered operatives of the Highway Patrol Group and Coast Guard and intercepted the vehicle at the control point in Danao.

The said port is where vehicles from Cebu are being checked for unauthorized transport of LSIs and disinfection.
