Chinese Diplomat Walks Over Pacific Islanders As Part Of Welcome Ceremony
CHINESE DIPLOMAT WALKS OVER ISLANDERS – A photo of a Chinese diplomat walking all over pacific islanders went viral.
Furthermore, people from the US and Australia helped make the photo go viral. However, for the people from Kiribati, the criticisms from social justice warriors of the west were mere signs of ignorance.
According to an article from ABS-CBN, the Chinese diplomat simply took part in a traditional local welcome ceremony. This was typically reserved for weddings but the elders of the Kiribati adapted it for this situation.
Meanwhile, according to Katerina Teaiwa, an Australian professor whose father was from Kiribati said:
Our islands have always been geopolitical playgrounds for others..
Given all that, it’s quite frustrating for Pacific Islanders not to be taken seriously or heard
Kiribati was a former British Colony close to the Equator. Moreover, it consists of 33 islands spanned across 1.4 million square miles of ocean. But, because of their geological advantages, both China and the United States have had keen interest on their islands.
As per the report, Kiribati is the closest neighbor to Hawaii. Along with this, the islands of the Pacific are equivalent to 15% of the word’s surface that sits between China, the United States, and Australia.
With this in mind, Jonathan Pyke, the director of the Pacific Islands Program at Lowy Institute said:
For their small size, they have really profound strategic significance..
In the Second World War, these tiny islands in the middle of a far-flung ocean had immeasurable strategic importance, and the geography hasn’t changed much since then.
