On August 4, the online community was surprised when an ostrich in Quezon City was seen running on the street.

That unexpected incident caught the attention of many netizens and it went viral on social media. There were various reactions to this but mostly netizens related this situation to the reality that is happening now.

Several celebrities also shared their reactions on the ostriches on the loose such as award-winning actress Alessandra de Rossi. She expressed concern for the welfare of the animal.

Other showbiz personalities who reacted to this were Bela Padilla and Glaiza de Castro. Reportedly, after the ostriches were caught, they were brought to Wildlife by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

On August 8, GMA News reported through its Twitter post that, one of the ostriches died. DENR spokesperson Usec. Benny Antiporda confirmed that the ostrich in Quezon City died due to stress.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and various issues in the Philippines nowadays, this viral incident involving the ostriches running on the loose were likened to what could have been in the minds of many Filipinos.

Aside from being a flightless swift-running African bird, ostrich also symbolizes a person who refuses to face reality or accept facts. With what is happening today, some might think of just escaping from the bad things.

When danger is coming, the natural coping mechanism of this animal is to bury its head in the sand.
