Philippines To Become SEA Coronavirus Hotspot According To Report

PHILIPPINES COVID-19 HOTSPOT – The Philippines would likely become the new coronavirus hotspot in South East Asia (SEA).

This was the report made by Singapore’s news outlet, “The Straits Times”. According to the report, the Philippines could become the new hotspot due to having the “biggest single-day jump” in infections.

On Tuesday, the Department of Health recorded 6,352 new coronavirus cases in the country. With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines grew to 112,593.

However, the spike was recorded despite having a strict lockdown re-imposed in Metro Manila and four other densely populated provinces. Moreover, this was after 7 months of the strictest lockdown in Asia.

Additionally, the report also mentioned Indonesia with the most number of infections in SEA. Compared to the Philippines’ current 115,980 cases as of Wednesday, Indonesia recorded 115,000 cases with “5,388 fatalities”.

The mortality in Indonesia was more than double that of the Philippines’ 2,115 deaths. But, there was previously a controversial report that said there were unreported deaths to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, according to experts from the University of the Philippines (UP), the country could have over 140,000 infections by the end of August. So far, projections from UP have been spot on, however, the Philippines surpassed their prediction last month.

Because of the massive increase in cases, the medical community called for a timeout and pleaded with the administration to re-impose an ECQ in critical areas. Fortunately, due to public outcry, President Duterte reverted Metro Manila and surrounding areas to an MECQ.
