Locals Find 20 Tons Of Tilapia Dead In Taal Lake

20 TONS OF TILAPIA DEAD – Over the weekend, more than twenty tons of tilapia were found dead in Taal Lake.

Residents and local authorities buried the fish last week after they found the fish dead on Friday along an area of the lake in Barangay Gulod. According to a report from ABS-CBN, a resident named Rose Marie Serrano said this number was low compared to last year’s 600-ton death.

Experts explained that the fish kill was caused by the lowering of dissolved oxygen levels in the water. Meanwhile, barangay Gulod Chairperson Gregorio Serrano said fishermen in the area are now struggling to recover.

Since January, residents around Taal Lake had to deal with the activity of the volcano. As per the report, Serrano hopes that there wouldn’t be any more fish deaths so that the livelihood of the residents could continue.

Luckily, the DENR said that not all the fish in the lake were affected by the massive fish kill. Due to the incident, authorities continued to monitor the condition of the lake.

The most common cause of lowered oxygen levels in lakes are algae. They feed on phosphorus and nitrates in runoff that feeds the lake. Then, the algal respiration consumes the dissolved oxygen at night causing the lowered oxygen levels.
