9 People Drink Hand Sanitizer as Substitute for Liquor, Declared Dead-on-Arrival at Hospital
INDIA – Nine people from India have died from drinking a hand sanitizer as a substitute for liquor after liquor shops have closed.
Police superintendent Siddharth Kaushal of Kurichedu town in Andhra Pradesh reported that several residents lost their consciousness after drinking a huge amount of hand sanitizer mixed with water or soda as a substitute for liquor.
The victims were rushed to the nearest hospital but the medical experts declared them dead-on-arrival. An investigation regarding the death of the nine residents who consumed the alcohol-based hand sanitizer has been launched, according to Kaushal.
Siddharth said that the group tried to consume sanitizer after the authorities implemented the lockdown of the town prompting liquor shops to close. The lockdown aims to fight the spread of the coronavirus disease in 2019.
The demise of nine people in Kurichedu has been recorded before the coronavirus death toll in India reached 35,000 on Friday (July 31, 2020).
Bootleggers usually add methanol to their homemade liquor to increase its alcohol content. Methanol is a toxic and harmful form of alcohol, which may cause harm to the body if consumed.
