Surigao del Sur experienced a 5.8 magnitude earthquake on Friday

EARTHQUAKE – A 5.8 magnitude quake jolted the province of Surigao del Sur on Friday, July 31, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

In the Philippines, the region of Mindanao often experiences quake and the strongest recorded shaking of the ground was the 7.1 magnitude quake in Davao Oriental.

This kind of natural disaster can be the most devastating to properties and even lives because is it not predictable unlike storm or typhoon. However, the government have been conducting awareness programs in how to respond amid this crisis.

Earthquake

Public and private sectors have done earthquake drills in order to prepare for the “Big One“. Reportedly, there is a great possibility that this great quake will happen but it can never be predicted when. It is expected to have a massive impact in the region of Luzon.

A recent strong quake was once again experienced by the people in Mindanao, particularly in Surigao del Sur.

Based on the report from Phivolcs, the 5.8 magnitude quake struck at 2:06 pm, east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 45 kilometers.

Those who are in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur felt Intensity III while residents in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental experienced Intensity II. Intensity I was recorded in Surigao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Kidapawan City; Tupi, South Cotabato; Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani.

Phivolcs said that damage and aftershocks are expected.
