What Is Authoritarianism? About This Form Of Government
AUTHORITARIANISM – In this topic, we are going to know about this form of government called Authoritarianism.
As mentioned above, it is a form of government which is described by a strong central power and limited political freedoms.
Regimes in this form of government can be autocratic or oligarchic in nature. This may also be based upon the rule of a party or the military.
This form of government possesses four qualities:
- Limited political pluralism, which is realized with constraints on the legislature, political parties and interest groups.
- Legitimacy on politics which is based upon appeals to emotion, as well as identification of the regime as a necessary evil to combat “easily recognizable societal problems.
- Minimal political mobilization and supprestion of anti-regime activities.
- Ill-defined executive powers which are usually vague and shifting, which extends the power of the executive.
It is also characterized by highly concentralized and centralized power which is maintained via political repression and the exclusion of potential challengers.
They utilize political parties and mass organizations in order to mobilize people around the goals of the regime.
The equilibrium on this form of government, as theorized by Polish-American professor Adam Przeworski, rests primarily on ” lies, fear and economic prosperity”.
