The four soldiers were shot in the back, based on an autopsy report, according to ABS-CBN News.

The National Bureau of Investigation also added that a firearm was also planted beside the body of Major Marvin Indammog after the shooting.

It has been recalled that the cops claimed that the soldiers were not wearing uniform and were onboard a sports utility vehicle and sped past a checkpoint. The cops also claimed that the soldiers pointed their guns at the cops, starting the clash.

However, the military said otherwise. The soldiers were chasing Abu Sayyaf extremists and identified themselves at the checkpoint.

While they were discussing with the policemen, one of the cops shot the military leader “without provocation”, which other policemen followed suit, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers.

Based on the report, Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay, chief of Philippine Army described the mishap as “fabricated”, “full of inconsistencies” and “misleading”, even saying that the slaying of his men is a “rubout”.

“Hindi ito misencounter. This is murder. They were killed. Rubout ito… Wala silang armas nung lumabas nila ng sasakyan, kasi alam nilang pulis ang kausap nila eh. Tingin mo kung nagkaputukan walang pulis na tatamaan doon?”

“We believe it was fabricated. Parang sine ‘yung ginawa nilang kuwento… Tapos after nilang pagbabarilin, iniwan nila ‘yung scene. Ganun ba ang SOP nila?”

NBI-Western Mindanao regional office chief Moises Tamayo said that it was unclear why the cops went after the vehicle after it left the checkpoint.
