7.8-Magnitude Alaska earthquake hits as per USGS.
ALASKA EARTHQUAKE – US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 7.8 earthquake hitting Alaskan Peninsula with tsunami warning.
According to the USGS, the strong shaking happened on early Wednesday morning off the coast of Alaska. It had a depth of six miles or 98 kilometers and was centered 60 miles south-southeast of Perryville, Alaska.
“Anything below 70 kilometers is considered a shallow quake,” says CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar which is accordingly important because this kind of quake often has the most damage “compared to the ones that are deeper, regardless of the strength.”
Following the earthquake, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released tsunami warning for south Alaska and the Alaska peninsula – Pacific coasts from Kennedy Entrance, Alaska (40 miles southwest of Homer) to Unimak Pass, Alaska.
Meanwhile, there’s no threat posted for Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, and California. Based on a report from Independent, aftershocks between 3.9 and 5.7-magnitude were recorded following announcement of huge shaking.
The tsunami warning stated possible “hazardous waves” within 300 km of the epicentre where people who will caught by the water can be drowned and crushed by debris or swept to the ocean. It has said: “Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300km of the earthquake epicentre.”
Meanwhile, as of this writing, there were no updates yet about the damages caused by the earthquake and netizens are encouraged to go on higher ground such as evacuating to inland or to higher places or designated tsunami hazard zones and leave the beach, harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays, and among other similar forms.
