Makati Police Nab 50 Chinese Nationals Over Illegal Pogo Operations

MAKATI POLICE – The police in Makati City recently arrested 50 Chinese nationals over illegal POGO operations.

This came from an official tweet from Inquirer which also posted a photo of the said arrest.

As mentioned above 50 individuals, all Chinese nationals, were arrested by Makati cops for illegal POGO operations (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators).

Furthermore, local police chief Colonel Oscar Jacildo added that the said firm was operating without a license from Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) amid the implemented GCQ (general community quarantine.

Based on the post, a Myanmar national was also arrested during the operation.

POGO stands for Philippine offshore gaming operators which is a firm that basically provides online gambling services to foreigners.

In our previous report concerning POGOs, Senator Risa Hontiveros said that the government “should not allow the POGOs to escape accountability and justice”.

The industry had reportedly amassed some P50 billion worth of unpaid taxes. Despite this, the government allowed some of them to operate amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in netizens raising questions about, in which the government attributed POGO to “fundraising” for COVID-19 responses.
