ABS-CBN TV Plus Vs. GMA Affordabox Amid Kapamilya’s Franchise Issue

Will ABS-CBN TV Plus bid goodbye and GMA Affordabox enter the scene?

ABS-CBN TV Plus finally has its competition as GMA Affordabox was recently launched.

After the Kapamilya network signed off on May 5, shows are still available on other affiliate networks of ABS-CBN as well as on its digital terrestrial television provider called TV Plus or “mahiwagang black box”.

On the other hand, during the House hearing on the franchise renewal of the TV giant in June 28, the National Telecommunications Commission vowed to Congress that it will stop the operations of TV Plus as well as the Channel 43.

Reportedly, the cease and desist order should also include the aforementioned affiliates of the Kapamilya network.

Amid the franchise issue and as ABS-CBN TV Plus is on the verge of ending its airing of shows, the Kapuso network launched its GMA Affordabox last June 26. It is cheaper than its rival as what its name obviously suggests.

Affordabox costs P888 which is 40 percent lesser than ABS-CBN’s plug-and-play device which has a P1,499 price tag. The latter was launched in 2015 and sold about 8.9 million units since that year, based on the article from Inquirer.

In a statement, GMA president and chief operating officer Gilberto Duavit Jr. said that “GMA Network has teamed up with the best product developers and engineers to give you a device built with additional features and high-quality materials at an accessible price.”

According to the chair and CEO of GMA, Felipe Gozon, the Affordabox will be accessible to millions of Filipinos. In previous interviews, he said that GMA was hesitant to launch its own digital TV service even though its rival has been using this for five years already.

Gozon said that they were still fine tuning the Affordabox and still finding ways to monetize this.
