14 Filipinos Missing At Sea Now Being Searched By Coast Guard

14 FILIPINOS MISSING AT SEA – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) launched a search and rescue operation for 14 Filipino fishermen who were lost at sea.

A Hong Kong-flagged cargo vessel collided with the Filipino fishing vessel FV Liberty 5. The Filipino ship carried 12 fishermen and two passengers when they got hit by MV Vienna Wood at around 1:00 AM on Sunday.

Following the tragic incident, 14 Filipinos have gone missing at sea. According to a report from Philstar, PGC patrol boat BRP Boracay begun search and rescue operations in the area of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.

Furthermore, PCG spokesperson Commodore Armand Balilo stated:

Initial report received by PCG – the incident was reported yesterday morning by the Captain of the cargo vessel. The cargo vessel departed Subic and on the way to Australia, and now being escorted by PCG vessel to Batangas

As per the report, the coast guard carried out the search operations after receiving a distress call from the captain of MV Vienna Wood. Afterward, the utility aircraft BN Islander and helicopter Airbus H145 were deployed utilized for the operation.

Recently, a group of Filipino fishermen also had a run-in with Chinese vessels. On June 9, a Chinese vessel rammed into a Filipino fishing boat causing 22 fishermen to be left at sea for hours. Luckily, Vietnamese fishermen came to rescue the Filipino crew members of fishing boat Gem-Ver.

Following the incident, the owner of the Chinese ship apologized. However, nobody was held accountable for what they did. Moreover, President Rodrigo Duterte simply downplayed the incident as a “little maritime accident”.
