Stranded OFWs in Saudi Arabia are Selling Blood to Buy Food

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) stranded in Saudi Arabia due to coronavirus crisis, are selling their blood to buy food and to survive.

Several of the stranded OFWs in Saudi Arabia have been forced to sell their blood so they could buy food to survive. This after their work was stopped because of the COVID-19 crisis and while waiting to be brought back to the Philippines.

OFWs Stranded in Saudi Arabia

There are more than 50 stranded OFWs have been stuck in a building in KSA for three months after the restaurant was stopped its operation. Some of them said that they were selling blood for 500 riyals, based on the report of GMA News.

“We have no money to spend. We all have nothing here. ‘Our other colleagues have been able to donate blood just to buy food,” one of the OFW said.

“We just wish we could all go home. Hopefully, the POLO, the OWWA, will help us, because the rest of us are really stressed out. We are all struggling,” he added.

Based on the report, most of the OFWs have salaries that have yet given by their employer. Meanwhile, the DFA-OUMWA has promised that they will try to get the stranded OFWs home within two to three months.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs – Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (DFA-OUMWA), approximately 167,626 Filipinos are stranded in different parts of the world. Most of them are in the Middle East at 158,633. Of these, 88,000 are in Saudia Arabia and 50,000 in the United Arab Emirates.
