Also known as Siberian white crane or snow crane, it is a bird of the crane family Grudiae. Among the cranes, they are distinctive since adult males are mostly snowy white, with the exception of their black feathers, which are visible in flight. They also make the longest distance migrations.

Its breeding area stretches formerly between the Urals and Ob river south to the Ishim and Tobol rivers and east to the Kolyma region in Siberia, Russia.

Scientific name

The binomial name of Siberian crane is Leucogeranus leucogeranus.

The genus and species Leucogeranus is derived from the classical Greek words leukos which means “white”, and geranos, which means “crane”. To put it simply, as a genus, it is a genus of white cranes.

Its former binomial name was Grus leucogeranus, Grus< its former genus, is Latin for “crane”. It is also the name of the constellation in the southern sky. As a constellation, it is one of the twelve that was conceived by Petrus Plancius.

The reason for the change of binomial name was because in 2010, a molecular phylogenetic study said that the genus is polyphyletic, which means it is a genus of species that have been grouped together but have no common ancestor.

The species was then moved to its current genus in a resulting rearrangement to create a monophyletic genera.
