Also known as the giant panda, panda bear or simply panda, it is a bear that is native to south central China.

The panda is known for having large, black patches around its eyes, over the ears, and across its round body.

The “giant panda” is used to distinguish itself from the red panda. Its name was borrowed into English from French. Possible derivations of its name were the Nepali word ponya, which refers to the wrist bone of the red panda, where the name of this creature came from.

Locally, it is named huāxióng or “spotted bear”, and zhúxióng  or “bamboo bear”.

This creature lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, usually in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu.

Scientific name

The binomial name of panda is Ailuropoda melanoleuca.

Ailuropoda is the only extant genus in the ursid oro bear family Ailuropodinae, where panda is its only living species. It is derived from the Greek terms aílouros, which means “cat”, and podós, which means “foot”.

The species name melanoleuca is an Ancient Greek combination of melano– and leukos, which means “black” and “white”, respectively.
