WHO Recommends Breastfeeding Despite Reports Of COVID-19 Being Found

WHO RECOMMENDS BREASTFEEDING – The World Health Organization (WHO) said breastfeeding mothers appear to not pass COVID-19 to their infants.

The health organization added that based on the current evidence, the benefits outweighed the risks of transmission. However, there have been several reports that would say otherwise.

Two lactating women who tested positive for COVID-19 were studied to see if their breast milk contained the virus. The women’s nipples were disinfected before collecting samples to prevent accidental contamination. Afterward, the milk was collected using a pump.

Milk from the second mother tested positive for COVID-19 for four consecutive days when she had mild symptoms of the virus. Although, when her symptoms started to fade, the breast milk collected tested negative as well.

Sadly, her baby also tested positive for coronavirus. However, researchers are still unsure whether or not the baby caught the infection from breast milk or another way.

Meanwhile, according to an article from GMA, the WHO stated:

We know that children are at relatively low risk of COVID-19, but are at high risk of numerous other diseases and conditions that breastfeeding prevents

Moreover, they emphasized that they had yet to detect live virus in breast milk. Afterward, they note that because of their findings, they suggest that the risk of transmission from mother to child had yet to be established.

Previously, the coronavirus was only thought to be present in the lungs. However, new studies have detected the virus in various parts of the body including the semen.
