Bureau of Customs Burns Unregistered Medicines, Cosmetics Products Found in Cavite

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) burns unregistered medicines and cosmetic products discovered in Trece Martires, Cavite, Saturday.

The imported products were seized from various operations of the Port of NAIA, BOC said.  A total of 1.5 tons of various imported goods including an estimated 400 kilograms of Goree beauty products were burned down using the Thermal Decomposer (Pyrolysis) of Integrated Waste Management Inc. (IWMI) in Cavite.

“Among the condemned goods are several packages of medicines, cosmetics, Goree products which were unlawfully imported into the country without the necessary permits and clearances from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” BOC said.

Based on the report of the Manila Bulletin, the seized products were immediately destroyed after they found out that the products are considered dangerous for public consumption.

According to the bureau, the use and distribution of Goree products which were found to contain toxic mercury levels beyond the limit set by the agency are strictly prohibited, as based on the FDA Advisory No. 2017-289.

The Port of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has already conducted intensify border protection efforts against dangerous goods and substances during the public health crisis. As of now, the Port has already conducted its fourth consecutive condemnation activities amid the pandemic.

According to Port of NAIA District Collector Mimel Talusan, they already condemned a total of 17.1 tons of dangerous, abandoned, and illegally imported goods at the Port.

“These include two tons of unsafe medicines and meat products on May 22, 8.7 tons of hazardous goods on May 29, and 4.9 tons of expired medicines, cosmetic on June 5,” Talusan said.
