The bureau added that tropical depression Butchoy, as well as habagat or the southwest monsoon, have recently brought amounts of rain in the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.

According to Inquirer, this prompted the bureau to officially declare the beginning of the rainy season.

The bureau added that this will bring scattered to widespread rains and thunderstorms, with chances of dry periods or monsoon breaks for several days up to 2 weeks.

This declaration was announced as Butchoy continues to move away from Luzon.

Based on the report, Butchoy was last seen at around 140 kilometers west northwest of Iba town, Zmbales or 165 kilometers wast of Dagupan city, Pangasinan.

It is packed with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

The bureau explained that there are four climate types in the Philippines.

Type I climate, or the western regions of the country have two pronounced seasons: Dry season (Nov – Apr) and wet season (May – Oct). The rest of the cimate types usually faces rainshowers.

The bureau fixates on areas under Type I in order to declare the start of rainy season.

If there are more than 50 percent of their stations in Type I climae areas report significant amount of rain for three consecutive days in a five-day period, this starts the rainy season.
