Dogs Trained To Sniff Out Coronavirus Shows 95% Success Rate

Dogs Were Trained To Sniff Out People With Coronavirus

DOGS TRAINED TO SNIFF OUT CORONAVIRUS – In the battle against COVID-19, humanity has found yet another ally – man’s best friend, Dogs.

A research group in France theorized that they could train dogs to help diagnose patients with COVID-19. Surprisingly, they discovered that the animal could in fact, detect its presence.

Based on an article from IOL, researchers from the National Veterinary School of Alfort trained eight Belgian Malinois shepherd dogs. These dogs were then trained to identify those infected with COVID-19.

In their study, the dogs were made to sniff body odor taken from the armpits of over 360 people both infected with the virus and those who are not. Following the tests, the researchers were astonished to see a 95% overall success rate.

As per the article, the researcher’s paper said the introduction of dog olfactive was a cheap and quick tool to pre-test participants for the virus.

The first step for such an approach was to determine if the samples we decided to choose (axillary sweat) could allow the dogs to olfactively discriminate between positive and negative people regarding Covid-19.

This proof-of-concept study provides evidence according to which the axillary sweat of Sars-CoV-2-infected people can be detected by trained dogs.

Afterward, the reserachers said the next step was to make a validation study using the same dogs with a proof-of-concept study. This would provide a sensibility of the dog’s diagnosis.

The researchers also emphasized that the use of dogs was not a new concept in detecting diseases. In 1989 researchers also theorized that dogs could be used to detect malignant tumors.
