Leila De Lima Seeks Probe On Mental Health Incidents During Coronavirus Pandemic

LEILA DE LIMA – Detained Opposition Senator Leila de Lima filed a resolution seeking Senate inquiry into mental health incidents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) obviously had an impact on our daily lifestyle. It changed how we work, shop, or travel. We are not free to roam around or join the crowd because of the daily virus.

COVID-19 cases around the world have passed six (6) million. In the Philippines, the government decided to postpone face-to-face classes until the COVID-19 vaccine is available. In a previous article, Vice President Leni Robredo urged the public to donate their old gadgets for distance learning.

Aside from adjusting to the “new normal,” Filipinos are still trying to endure the harmful effects of the virus from China. Detained opposition Senator Leila de Lima asked the government to also focus on the mental health of the citizens during the coronavirus crisis.

The lawyer made the call after learning that COVID-19 has caused anxiety to lots of Filipinos. She said, “As the global COVID-19 pandemic pushes further into 2020, the collective feelings of fear anxiety and sorrow are beginning to affect many of our countrymen.”

“A new concern is surfacing – the mental and psychological health of people. If not immediately addressed, it will be like poison that will creep through the lives of many in ways that could sometimes be more lethal,” she added.

Based on a report from Inquirer, Senator Leila de Lima recently filed a resolution seeking a Senate inquiry into the reported rise of mental health incidents in the country during the coronavirus pandemic.

“To direct the appropriate senate committee to conduct an inquiry, in aid of legislation into the reported increase of mental health incidents during this pandemic, with the end in view of reviewing the implementation of Republic Act No. 11036, or the mental health act, for the purpose of crafting and integrating a comprehensive mental health strategy in relation to COVID-19”
