Teacher’s Group Protests While Inside Their Cars Against Physical Classes

TEACHER’S GROUP PROTESTS – As the Philippines still struggles against COVID-19, a teacher’s group protested inside their cars in front of the DepEd in Pasig.

The group voiced out against starting of classes without mass testing. Moreover, they also demanded laptops and internet allowances for teachers as part of DepEd’s “Blended Learning” initiative.

The teachers were protesting inside a van and held up cards that read: “LAPTOP for every TEACHER!” and “NO MASS TESTING NO PHYSICAL REPORTING”.

Additionally, the teachers also called for a monthly internet allowance of P1,500. This would also be the average amount a subscriber would pay for a basic internet plan with internet service providers in the country.

Currently, some Universities had already begun online summer classes. However, students and teachers alike echoed complaints of unstable internet speeds and lack of proper equipment.

Meanwhile, DepEd had planned to begin the school year on August 24, 2020. However, as the country still suffers from a continued increase in coronavirus cases, concerned agencies called for a further delay in classes.

But, some schools have already opted to begin their first semester strictly with online classes and have the next semester be “blended” classes. This would mean a mix of physical and online classes with a limited number of students in each class.

Many netizens including teachers and students also agree with the Teacher’s group’s plea. Though it is true that the advent of technology allows the concept of online learning, people still need a way to access these platforms.
