Locusts Invasion in Dhamar Province, Yemen Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Swarms of locusts invade a cultivation area in Dhamar Province in Yemen threatening crops and might cause food crisis amid pandemic.

Over the past few months, there are a lot of reports regarding locust invasion in some countries causing food shortage. Swarms of pests have already invaded East Africa, India, and other countries.

It is sad to think that the pestilence came amid the coronavirus pandemic, which is still spreading in different countries all around the world. The pests contribute to the struggles of the people affected by the health crisis.

Earlier this week, billions of desert locusts were seen invading some cultivation areas in the province of Dhamar, Bayda, Ibb, Dhalea, Mahweet and Hajjah. The locusts can be seen on the ground.

The government forces of Yemen and Houthi rebels were engaged in a five-year civil war causing a brink of starvation to millions of people. The war also causes a shortage of pesticides in the country.

The shortage of pesticides and rainy season triggered the swarm of migratory desert locusts to go out of control and invade the war-torn country of Yemen.
