The peacock or green swallowtail is a butterfly under the Swallowtail butterfly family Papilionidae.

It is usually found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. It is usually confused with the emerald swallowtail (Papilio palinurus), the difference is that this species has a mostly bluish green tail and is bigger.

The wingspan of this butterfly is 120–140 milimeters or 4.7–5.5 inches.

Some of this species have an eye-catching metallic colour.

Its well-known features in the wing are rows of very small concave surfaces that reflect light in many ways.

Scientific Name

The binomial name of green swallowtail is Papilio blumei.

The genus Papilio is the only representative of the tribe Papilionini, which inlcludes a number of well-known North American species. Papilio is the Latin term for “butterfly”.

The etymology species name blumei is unknown but it might have been associated with the word blue or the term “colored” or “painted”.

This species also have two sub species:

  • Papilio blumei blumei (northern Sulawesi)
  • Papilio blumei fruhstorferi (southern Sulawesi)
