277 Tricycle Drivers Tests Positive For Coronavirus Says Local Officials

MANDALUYONG – Fears arose as at least 277 tricycle drivers were found positive for the new coronavirus in Mandaluyong City.

According to the Chief of Staff of Mayor Carmelita, Jimmy Isidro, as of Wednesday, 277 of 4,3000 tricycle drivers have been tested so far. However, what was detected from the drivers were antibodies that are produced after the body was infected with COVID-19.

This meant that the drivers had previously been infected with the virus, potentially had symptoms and recovered. Luckily, one of the city’s requirements for re-operation was being tested for the virus.

As such, the drivers who tested positive have yet to continue operations of their tricycles. Meanwhile, based on a report from Inquirer, the drivers have been placed under isolation. Moreover, they would still undergo confirmatory swab tests.

These tests are more reliable. However, they require more effort and time to procure. The difference between the two tests is that rapid test kits only detect antibodies. Meanwhile, the swab test can definitely detect the presence of COVID-19.

As per the report, Mayor Abalos was puzzled by the high number of COVID-positive tricycle drivers. Furthermore, those who tested positive were from scattered locations and different villages. Thus, the different clusters scattered throughout the city is a possibility.

You cannot trace how it was spread to them because our testing was random

These drivers are all from different barangays so we cannot pinpoint.

However, Abalos emphasized that the drivers showed no symptoms of the deadly virus. Moreover, she noted that the numbers of positive cases could rise in the coming days due to more tests.
