ROCKET STRIKES IN US EMBASSY – On Early Tuesday Morning, one rocket hit close to the US Embassy in Baghdad.

The rocket was the first to land within the high-security zone in weeks. Furthermore, the explosion was heard throughout the Iraqi capital causing the Embassy’s security siren to go off. However, no casualties were confirmed.

But, there were no immediate claims of responsibility following the attack. Previously, there were dozens of attacks against the Americans in Iraq since October.

According to a report from Arab News, the US blamed those attacks on Iran-backed factions within Iraq’s security. Moreover, the past attacks had taken the lives of British, US, and Iraqi armed personnel.

This led to Washington and Baghdad having strained ties altogether. Furthermore, tensions rose to new heights in January after the US killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian top general.

However, the US and Iraq aimed to reset the relationship following the seating of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhemi. As per the report, bilateral talks between the US and Iraq were planned for June.

Additionally, the negotiations hoped to set a basis for the presence of US troops. Moreover, these were the troops which were stationed in Iraq since 2014 to lead a campaign against the Daesh group.

But, the presence of these forces were said to be a thorn in the Iran and its allies in Iraq. As such, these groups insisted that the US army leave their country.

Last week, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that the us would not be staying in Iraq or Syria. Following this, he said that if they fail to withdraw, they would “certainly be expelled”.
